Answers to your questions about AdBlue® By Madin

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue ® is a diesel exhaust gas treatment fluid consisting of 32.5% high-purity urea * and 67.5% deionized water , in compliance with the ISO22241 standard. Urea is produced synthetically from ammonia and CO2 ( carbon dioxide ) . AdBlue ® is used by vehicles equipped with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, such as heavy-duty trucks, buses, and construction machinery. It has been used since September 2014. Biodegradable , water-soluble and colourless, AdBlue ® crystallizes at -11°C and decomposes to ammonia from 80°C (from 30°C). AdBlue ® is a registered trademark of the German Automotive Industry Association (VDA).

Pure urea is an industrial product , produced from ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The chemical formula is CO(NH2)2. When heated, urea decomposes into ammonia gas. In this state, nitrogen oxides ( NOx ) are converted into nitrogen and into water (N2, H 2 O).

Combined with SCR technology, AdBlue ® converts 85% to 95% of NOx emissions ( nitrogen oxides produced in diesel exhaust ) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. As a result, NOx , a major source of atmospheric pollution, is significantly reduced.

In order to improve air quality, the European Union has regulated pollutant emissions through various European directives and regulations since 1990. Since then, a number of standards (Euro 1 to Euro 6) have been implemented to set increasingly lower emission limits.

European emission standards aim to reduce harmful emissions, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter (PM). SCR technology using AdBlue® is one of the systems selected to meet EURO standards targets and reduce polluting emissions.

SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) is the name of a post-combustion exhaust gas treatment technology for Diesel engines, converting nitrogen oxides (NOx) into water vapor and nitrogen using AdBlue®. The air we breathe is 80% nitrogen, which is completely harmless. With the emission levels of heavy vehicles according to the European Standards Euro 4, Euro 5 and 6, most car manufacturers have decided to use this technology to respect the new regulations on NOx emissions. For passenger cars, SCR has only appeared in Europe since 2014 with the Euro 6 standard.

AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust pipe, located before the SCR catalyst and after the engine. When heated inside the exhaust pipe, AdBlue® decomposes into ammonia (NH3) and into carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). When NOx reacts with ammonia inside the catalyst, harmful NOx molecules are converted into harmless nitrogen (N2) and into water (H2O).

Tank size depends on the vehicle rather than on AdBlue® itself. Passenger cars and light commercial vehicles typically carry a 10–20 litre tank; heavy trucks and buses usually carry 40–90 litres, sized so that a top-up falls close to a routine service interval.

Because consumption follows diesel use rather than distance alone, the same tank will last a different length of time on long-haul work than on stop-start city duty. Check your vehicle handbook for the exact figure. Madin supplies 10L and 20L cans, 200L drums and 1000L tanks to suit both single vehicles and depot refuelling.

As with fuel, a number of factors influence consumption: vehicle type, engine type, vehicle load, terrain and driving style. Furthermore, the size of AdBlue tanks varies considerably, so the frequency of refilling depends particularly on the vehicle type.

However, the average AdBlue consumption is around 3-5L for every 100L of diesel.

On heavy duty trucks, the gauge shows the remaining AdBlue® level in the tank. On passenger cars, a warning light appears on the dashboard when there is 2,400 km remaining (when this signal appears, it is time to top up).

AdBlue ® is non-flammable, non-explosive and harmless to the environment. It is classified as a transportable liquid with minimal risk. If you spill AdBlue ® on your hands or clothes, simply wash it off with water.

On the dashboard, the warning light will come on for approximately 2,400km before you need to refill AdBlue ® (this warning level is common to all vehicles and is standard). However, when the light comes on, you should not worry too much because the vehicle can travel a few hundred more kilometres . Note that you need to pour at least 4L of AdBlue into the tank for the warning light to go out.

No. AdBlue® never enters the engine or the fuel system — it is injected into the exhaust stream after combustion, ahead of the SCR catalyst. Power, torque and throttle response are unaffected.

If anything the effect is positive: because NOx is cleaned downstream, the engine can be tuned for efficiency rather than for emissions compliance alone. The one case where performance does change is when the tank runs dry or is filled with off-specification fluid — the ECU then derates the engine and limits speed until correct AdBlue® is restored. Keeping the tank topped up with certified fluid from a Madin filling station avoids that entirely.

The use of SCR and AdBlue ® technology allows for the optimization of the combustion process, which can result in reduced fuel consumption for some vehicles. This reduction in consumption is already included in the figures published by car manufacturers.

SCR technology is designed to work with AdBlue fluid that meets ISO 22241 requirements. All AdBlue® labelled products meet this ISO standard and ensure smooth SCR operation, regardless of your car brand.

AdBlue® By Madin is currently an exhaust treatment solution for diesel engines, manufactured by Madin company, trusted by many customers, meeting Euro 4, 5, 6 emission standards and ISO 22241, DIN70070 standards, certified by VDA, committed to good quality, compatible with current diesel vehicles.

Yes. Currently, AdBlue® By Madin has 1700 points of use and 800 points of sale, so you can find your nearest filling station or call the Hotline +84 886 634 634 for support.

The selling price of AdBlue® By Madin exhaust gas treatment solution at AdBlue pumping stations can range from 12,000 to 16,000 VND/liter, depending on the area and time, the price difference may be different but not significant.

SCR technology is the most advanced technology today with low cost and optimal fuel economy. SCR can reduce NOx emissions by up to 90% , HC and CO emissions by 50-90% and PM emissions by 30-50%. In the transportation industry, some companies with fleets equipped with SCR emission control systems have seen fuel savings of 3-5% compared to vehicles equipped with EGR systems.

Over time, the catalytic converter can become less effective due to dirt, carbon soot … long-term damage can easily lead to. Replacement will be more expensive than maintaining the system by periodic flushing, usually trucks traveling about 20,000-50,000 km need to be maintained and flushed once to help restore the engine to its original state.

Currently, only Madin provides a maintenance and cleaning service for the SCR exhaust gas treatment system, using our specialised Madin Cleaner solution. The service price when customers come to clean directly at Madin is 2,000,000 VND.
